What each aircraft is good at
The honest differences
Helicopter: closer, slower, lands anywhere flat. Ski plane: higher, faster, lands on the névé.
A helicopter can land almost anywhere flat. That is the whole point of it: a shoulder of snow the size of a tennis court is a landing site. It can also fly slowly and turn tightly, so a helicopter flight spends more of its time close to rock and ice.
A ski plane needs a run, and gets one high on the Tasman. The névé is the flat snowfield above the crevasse line, and it is long enough to land and take off along. The landing feels quite different — a run across the surface rather than a vertical settle.
The plane covers more ground. For the same minutes you see more of the glacier system, from higher up. The helicopter shows you less country but shows it from closer.
Both depend on the same weather. Neither aircraft lands on a snowfield without clear surface definition, which is why flat grey light cancels landings even when the air is perfectly flyable.
