How long should the flight be? 20, 30, 45 or 90 minutes

The flights on this page run from twenty minutes to an hour and a half, and the price roughly quadruples across that range. Here is what each length actually buys you, and where the sensible stopping point is for most people.

A helicopter over the Southern Alps on a clear morning

Quick answer

Thirty minutes with a landing is the right flight for most first-time visitors. Twenty minutes at $167 is a real flight with a real landing and the best value on this page. Past forty-five minutes you are paying for distance rather than for a better view, and only Milford Sound justifies the ninety-minute price.

Twenty to thirty minutes

The sweet spot, and why

Twenty minutes is a full flight; thirty is the comfortable answer; past forty-five you are buying distance.

Twenty minutes is not a taster. The Queenstown flight at $167 lifts off, crosses the lake, climbs into the Remarkables, lands on snow, shuts down and comes back. Everything that makes an alpine flight worth doing happens inside twenty minutes.

Thirty minutes adds depth, not a different experience. The Wanaka flight at $246 and the Franz Josef snow-landing flight at $196 put you further into the same country and give you longer on the ground. This is where most people should land.

Thirty-five to forty-five minutes is for the glaciers. At Franz Josef, $270 buys two glaciers instead of one; at Aoraki, $357 buys the length of the Tasman. These add scenery you cannot get in twenty minutes.

Past that, you are buying distance. The Earnslaw Burn flight at $399 and the Milford crossing at $687 go somewhere a short flight cannot reach. That is a real reason — but it is a different reason from «longer is better».

Choosing your length

Four questions that settle it

Answer these and the number of minutes picks itself.

  • Do you want to stand on snow?

Then twenty minutes is enough — the cheapest landing flight is $167.

  • Do you want a named glacier?

Then thirty-five to forty-five minutes at Franz Josef or Aoraki, from $270.

  • Do you want somewhere the road does not go?

Then Earnslaw Burn at $399 or Milford at $687. That is what the extra minutes are for.

  • Is anyone in the group nervous?

Then shorter is better. Twenty minutes in calm morning air is the gentlest introduction on this page.

Common questions

Flight length, answered

How long should a helicopter flight in New Zealand be?

Twenty to thirty minutes suits most people, and every flight in that range lands on snow. The cheapest is $167.

Is twenty minutes long enough?

Yes. A twenty-minute flight still climbs into the alps, lands and shuts down. It is a complete flight, not a taster.

What does a longer flight add?

Between thirty and forty-five minutes it adds named glaciers and more time on the ground. Past that it mostly adds distance — Earnslaw Burn, or the crossing to Milford Sound.

Which is the longest flight?

The Milford Sound crossing from Queenstown at $687, about ninety minutes with two landings.

Does the landing time count as flight time?

Generally not. Operators quote air time, and the five to ten minutes on the snow is additional.

Is a longer flight smoother?

No — the hour matters far more than the length. Morning air is the calmest at any duration.
